Spay/Panama aims to continue systematically reaching the thousands of feral cats and stray dogs that roam the beaches with the backing of local rescuers.
As of to date over 3,500 animals have been fixed from Punta Chame to Rio Hato.
The beaches are a tourist attraction with many low-income communities surrounding the resort areas. The locals work in the resorts but are a world apart. Almost all the local houses have one or several dogs tied to the front of the house to guard the property. The majority of the guardians cannot afford a regular priced spay/neuter operation. The wild pack of dogs roaming the potholed streets and the numerous feral cat colonies around the garbage dumps are the product of uncontrolled breeding of cats and dogs with a home.
The project will be done in conjunction with the Health Ministry and local authorities. Makeshift clinics will be set up in schools and health centers designated by the Health Ministry to sterilize 1,000 animals. For the project to be successful, it must be done in a massive, systematic, and extensive manner.
MASSIVE to target the largest number possible of dogs and cats of the area.
SYSTEMATIC for the project to be continuous and sustained over time.
EXTENSIVE meaning that the project must go to the different areas within the municipality, especially those of low-income, where there is a high concentration of animals and the people do not have the means to mobilize or pay for the sterilization services.
